Life sciences startups secure provincial support

In its recent announcement on June 9, 2025, the Ontario government reaffirmed its commitment to nurturing home‑grown health‑tech innovation, investing in early‑stage life science ventures through grants across a broad spectrum of cutting‑edge startups. Among the recipients of funding through the Life Sciences Innovation Fund are two participants in the University of Toronto’s H2i entrepreneurship program, PhenoTips and Deep Breathe.

PhenoTips, a Toronto‑based enterprise, offers the “Genomic Health Record”: a secure data platform that enables comprehensive pedigree charting, phenotype‑based diagnosis suggestions, and cancer risk assessments. A graduate of CDL’s Health stream and H2i, PhenoTips is used in over 60 countries and clinical systems across Canada, the UK, and the U.S.

Deep Breathe, with operations in London, Waterloo, and Vancouver, is pioneering AI‑driven, portable lung ultrasound diagnostics. Its solutions automate and enhance lung imaging. Supported by H2i, the company has earned global recognition, conducting real‑world pilots in clinical and military settings.

Both companies typify H2i’s mission to “inspire, enable and empower aspiring and early‑stage health entrepreneurs.” The government’s grants will further fuel their scaling efforts: PhenoTips in standardizing genomic data across health systems; and Deep Breathe in broadening lung health diagnostics using AI‑powered ultrasound.
